On November 19, Jimmy Smagula held a three-hour masterclass for UNO students. The session was part of the new monthly School of the Arts Professional Development Monthly Workshops. Eight singer-actors, who had previously been coached by faculty members Hal France and Shelby Van Nordstrand, presented repertoire that included songs by Stephen Sondheim, Lin Manuel Miranda, Tom Kitt, Jason Robert Brown, Carmel Dean, Clark Gesner, and Jeanine Tesori.
Jimmy Smagula is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and made his Broadway debut at age 24 in the original Broadway company of “The Full Monty” where he understudied and performed the role of Dave Bukatinski. He also appeared on Broadway in “Billy Elliot” where he performed the role of the boxing teacher, George, “The Little Mermaid” as Chef Louis, “To Be or Not to Be” at Manhattan Theater Club, “Damn Yankees” (Encores) as Rocky with Sean Hayes and Jane Krakowski, “The Phantom of the Opera” as Piangi, and “Man of La Mancha” with Brian Stokes Mitchell. He recently starred as Jacey Squires in “The Music Man” with Norm Lewis, Jessie Mueller and Rosie O’Donnell at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
The November School of the Arts Professional Development Workshop was his second time coaching UNO students, the first being in January 2020 while visiting Omaha with the national tour of “Les Misérables.”
